Hazelnut And Chocolate Spread – Healthy Nutella (GF & Vegan)

Look no further for the most delicious and simple hazelnut and chocolate spread!  What’s more, as I believe you have to nourish to flourish, it is made with only four items and they are all healing ingredients.

This Brit in Manhattan promises to bring you lots of delicious recipes like this one that will satisfy your cravings in a way you won’t feel guilty afterwards, for those who need chocolate in their life (like me), but are also on a quest to be healthy and to feel marvellous (me again).

People in New York do love a sweet treat and as with everything in The City, there is so much variety. However, I’m glad I have learnt to make my own delicious sweet snacks made with food that I know has nutrients to heal my body.

Cacao in it’s purest form has heaps of antioxidants that help my immune system.  But many store-bought chocolate treats have lost their nutritional benefits during the processing and much of what’s added makes me feel awful.  From mounds of high fructose corn syrup to many chemically sounding ingredients that I can’t pronounce added to prolong the shelf life.

But cor blimey I don’t have to worry with my Hazelnut And Chocolate Spread!  It’s what the British call scrummy – it’s so tasty!  Made with only four ingredients (including cacao in its raw form) and it doesn’t contain dairy, gluten or refined sugar!  100% organic maple syrup is the only sweetener, which has antioxidant polyphenols shown to improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin and it has an anti-cancer effect.

This recipe fills up a couple of my empty smaller jars as shown, or one large one.  I tend to keep this treat on hand for spreading on my other homemade sweet snacks or sometimes I have a spoonful on its own.  A jar is great to also give away as a food gift, one made with only loving ingredients for those you hold dear.

Enjoy and I hope you have a jolly good day!

Instructions

  1. Place hazelnuts in the oven on a baking tray for 15 minutes at 170C or 340F and then leave out to cool.
  2. Whilst they are still warm, place in a clean dish towel, wrap them up and rub them against each other to remove the skins. Note: don't worry if there are some bits of skin that are stuck to the nuts and tricky to come off.
  3. Place the nuts in a food processor for 5-10 minutes until a hazelnut butter has formed.
  4. Add the maple syrup and cacao powder and blend again.
  5. After it is blended well, keep adding the almond milk gradually in between blending further. Note: it is important the milk is added gradually and blended well in the mixture.
